Texas Gulf Coast

As of 3/1/08, we are staying at a county park along the Gulf Coast of Texas.  We have been hanging out in the Rio Grande Valley until the last few days. We are just about as far south as we can get in the US. The Valley is winter home to a large population of midwestern seniors, otherwise known as “Snowbirds” (They fly south for the winter, or in this case, drive.) Since they teasingly call us kids, we have decided that makes us “Fledglings”.

Since moving to the coast, we have been admiring all the shore birds. There are a lot of new bird pictures in the album! Our park is literally surrounded by the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge. We can hear the owls hunting every night from the trailer. We have also heard the coyotes yipping. Yesterday was spent at South Padre Island. I (Jenn) couldn’t wait to get my feet wet in the ocean. We have been looking forward to seeing the ocean again, and spent several hours on the beach. The water was much warmer than we expected. Not warm enough to dive yet, but we are tempted to return in a warmer month to explore the ship wrecks off the coast.

It is nice to be in a quieter location than commercial RV parks. There are only 30 sites here and they are half empty during the week. The Arroyo Colorado Channel runs alongside the parkand there are a lot of pelicans and other sea birds to enjoy. The only downside is spotty cell phone coverage, but we can handle that inconvenience for the chance to feel like we are camping again.

We are heading up the coast in a few days towards Corpus Christi and then will be slowly working our way back to Colorado by the end of April for some work committments. After a month or so there, we will head out again for our second summer on the road.
